“Show Me the Data! How Libraries Support Research Data Management Plans and Data Sharing Requirements” was held on Sunday, June 25, 3:00–4:00 pm, and featured two speakers discussing the library’s role in supporting research data management programs in academic institutions. Research data management is essential in the research enterprise. Many grant funding agencies now require data management plans to be included in grant applications, particularly governmental agencies funding research with public funds. Data management plans specify how research data will be analyzed, stored, and shared to ensure data is handled and preserved appropriately.

The Cataloging and Metadata Management Section (CaMMS) of ALCTS sponsored this forum, “Power That Is Moral: Creating a Cataloging Code of Ethics,” which was held on Sunday, June 25. The two presentations were designed to give the audience some structural background and common vocabulary to discuss the proposed code of ethics.

Cataloging & Metadata for the Web: Meeting the User Where They Are: 2017 Annual Conference

The ALCTS Preconference “Cataloging and Metadata for the Web: Meeting the User Where They Are” was held on Friday, June 23, 2017. Of the 63 attendees, approximately half were from academic libraries, while the rest were from public libraries, special libraries, and a few other types of organizations. The preconference included seven speakers with questions and answers throughout the day.

ALCTS Affiliates Showcase Forum: 2017 Annual Conference

The ALCTS Affiliate Relations Committee decided to do something a little different this year at the 2017 ALA Annual Conference with an “Affiliates Showcase.” Instead of putting out a call for presentation submissions from affiliate groups, the idea was to have a discussion forum on various issues facing local, state, and regional technical services groups. These local groups often play a critical role in professional development and community building for library staff.
