Spotlight on Serials: Current & Future Trends in Open Access in Latin America

The ALCTS Continuing Resource Section (CRS) Forum took place at the 2019 ALA Annual Conference on Sunday, June 24. The session, titled “Spotlight on Serials: Current and Future Trends in Open Access in Latin America,” featured Ivonne Lujano, ambassador of Open Access Journals in Latin America, and Solange Santos, publishing coordinator at Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Lujano spoke about the history of open access in Latin America, best practices and standards in publishing, and how the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) improves scholarly research on a global scale. Santos spoke about the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and why Latin America is advanced in its use of an open access publishing model.

CRS Holdings Information Forum

Approximately 30 people attended the ALCTS Continuing Resources Section (CRS) Holdings Information Forum, which took place at the 2018 ALA Midwinter Meeting on Saturday, February 10. The program, titled “Making Holdings Work,” was sponsored by the section’s Committee on Holdings. The forum featured two presentations by librarians configuring their discovery layers and holdings. Both presentations provided novel experiences and practical lessons.

CRS Education, Research, & Publications Forum

The ALCTS Continuing Resources Section (CRS) Education, Research, and Publications Forum took place at the 2018 ALA Midwinter Meeting on Saturday, February 10. Diane Boehr, presented “PubMed Central — Publishing Trends of Journals Containing Articles by NIH-Funded Authors that are not Selected for the NLM Collection.” Robert Heaton presented “Factors in Staff Satisfaction with E-Resource Troubleshooting Tools.”

CRS Cataloging Forum

The ALCTS Continuing Resource Section (CRS) Cataloging Forum took place at the 2018 ALA Midwinter Meeting on Sunday, February 11. Ben Abrahamse organized the forum and delivered an update prepared by Regina Reynolds in her absence. The remainder of the meeting was given over to Steven Riel who gave a presentation entitled “Series as Serials: Implications of Two Current Cataloging Instructions.”
