Net Neutrality Update: It’s Not Over!

Shortly after ALCTS News published “Three Things ALCTS Members Can Do to Advocate for Net Neutrality,” the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) voted to repeal Net Neutrality in a 3-2 party-line vote. Since that time, technology companies, consumer advocacy groups, and officials from both legislative and judicial branches at the state and federal levels have taken steps to fight back. What can you do to continue to advocate for protections to net neutrality? Inform yourself on the issue. Contact your representatives in Congress. Keep up to date with ALA and ALCTS advocacy.

ALCTS Financial Report: Fiscal Year 2017 & Future Trends

ALCTS ended its 2016–2017 fiscal year (FY17) far ahead of budget projections with a net revenue of $82,935. Overall revenue was $614,613, ahead of budget by $80,888 (15%) and above FY16 (2015–2016) by $111,820. Direct expenses of $447,927 were below budget by $37,368 (8%). In this article, we discuss the reasons for the surplus in FY17, as well as the current state of the budget and projections for future fiscal years.

Preserving Government Information, Now & in the Future

In the fraught and fast-paced environment of today’s Capitol Hill, ALA’s Washington Office monitors and advocates for issues important to libraries and the communities they serve, including issues of particular interest to ALCTS and its sections. One advocacy issue of particular interest to ALCTS is the modernization of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) and Title 44 of the U.S. Code.

Remembering Gene Dickerson

Eugene H. Dickerson, known to most as Gene, passed away on Saturday, December December 16, 2017 after a long battle with cancer. Gene was a long-time ALCTS member who served on numerous Continuing Resources Section (CRS) and ALCTS division committees, including the Worst Serial Title Change Award, the CRS Continuing Resources Cataloging Committee, and the ALCTS Organization & Bylaws Committee. Gene worked for a number of years at the National Library of Medicine and most recently at the Bunche Library for the U.S. Department of State. He was an expert serials cataloger and taught serials cataloging for the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP).
