ALCTS Seeking Cataloging & Metadata Management Awards Nominations for 2019

Nominations are being accepted for the 2019 Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) awards for outstanding achievement and promise in the field of cataloging, classification, and metadata management. The awards are presented by the Cataloging and Metadata Management Section of ALCTS. One award honors an individual who shows promise in the field of metadata, while the other recognizes an individual whose work represents the finest achievements in research, collaboration, creative work, leadership and service.

Linked Data for the Rest of Us: e-Forum Summary

The ALCTS e-Forum “Linked Data for the Rest of Us” took place on July 24–25, 2018. Anne Washington (coordinator of metadata services), Andrew Weidner (digital operations coordinator), and Xiping Liu (resource description librarian)—all of the University of Houston M.D. Anderson Library—moderated the discussion. Over 70 people posted around 200 messages during the two-day discussion.

Present & Future Challenges of Cataloging Special Collections Material: e-Forum Summary

On May 22–23, 2018, the ALCTS Continuing Education Committee hosted the e-forum “Present and Future Challenges of Cataloging Special Collections Material.” The discussion was facilitated by Becky Skeen (special collections cataloging librarian at Utah State University) and Gail Spears (poetry and literature cataloger at Emory University) and included over 225 messages posted by more than 70 participants.

ANMIG Seeks Volunteers for 2018–2019

The ALCTS New Members Interest Group (ANMIG) is seeking volunteers to serve for 2018–2019. ANMIG has focused on the interest of new ALCTS members and information professionals since 2009. The group is charged with developing interest group meetings at ALA conferences, helping new members of ALCTS assimilate to the division, plan virtual events and share pertinent information to the larger library community. Currently, the positions of co-vice chair, student liaison, social media coordinator, and member-at-large. Remembering John D. Byrum, 1940–2018

We write to pay tribute to the life and work of our friend and colleague John Donald Byrum, a leading figure in national and international cataloguing for many decades and a wise and valued mentor. His Washington Post obituary described him as a quiet and thoughtful man, and he was, but those of us who spent time with him in professional meetings and in private life knew him to be warm, witty, and convivial—the best of company and the best of friends.
