One Response to Problems with RDA 3.4.5.9, Leaves or Pages of Plates

  1. Francis Lapka says:

“The Exception for Early printed resources seems to be misplaced. It probably belongs after the paragraph about disregarding unnumbered sequences of plates. The order of instructions here could be informed by 3.4.5.3.1.”

FL: Not in complete agreement with that last “problem.” The exception for Early Printed Resources treats the issue of what to do with a mixture of leaves and pages of plates—i.e. the guideline almost immediately preceding the exception (perhaps “If the numbering of the leaves or pages of plates is complex or irregular, see 3.4.5.8” should be slotted lower). Arguably, we need a distinct exception for Early Printed Resources to deal with the issue of unnumbered sequences of plates. Such an exception could be modeled on the exception at 3.4.5.3.1 (“For early printed resources, record unnumbered sequences of pages, leaves, or columns.”) and could follow the paragraph about disregarding unnumbered sequences of plates.

    1. Does CC:DA agree that this instruction should be clarified?
FL: Yes, the problems identified above require clarification.

    3. Do you have initial thoughts about how to approach solving these problems?
FL: As Glennan suggests, the language of 3.4.5.3.1 could inform parallel guidelines at 3.4.5.9.
